Against the backdrop of the rise of (far) right-wing populism in recent years, this study turns to the trial of Greek neo-nazi party Golden Dawn (2015-2020) and focuses on the relation between the law, theatricality, and the media as it unravels in the case of this trial. Aiming to disseminate a trial that could not be witnessed first-hand, as the public was not allowed entry in the courtroom, grassroots organizations kept posting the proceedings online in real time, creating a virtual theatre that started to function as a ‘supplement’ to the actual trial. This project will scrutinize the mediations involved in the trial’s dissemination and in its artistic restagings by utilizing concepts and theoretical tools from cultural analysis, performance studies, and critical legal studies.
