“Show me your archive and I will show you who is in power!” – Gloria Wekker
This masterclass will examine the specific challenges of documenting and disseminating women’s lives and histories and ask what the tasks of a feminist archive are today.
It takes the format of an open conversation between Dr. C.S. Lakshmi (Director, Sound and Picture Archives for Research on Women, SPARROW, Mumbai/India and Prince Claus Award Laureate 2014) and Renée Römkens, Director and Evelien Rijsbosch, Coordinator Image and Oral History Collections (Atria, Institute for Gender Equality and Women’s History, Amsterdam). The masterclass will address a range of questions, such as: What are the specific histories of these archives in relation to women’s struggles for social justice and rights? What kinds of materials, artefacts, texts, records and intangible sources find a place in the feminist archive? What is the special role of the oral history collections? How do these institutions contest mainstream male-dominated archival practices and how do they seek to intervene and participate in the public sphere? What are the ways in which a critical global feminism can be fruitfully imagined?
RMA Students who attend the entire event and submit a 1000-word written response engaging with materials from the archives of Atria are eligible for 1 EC. To register send an email to: email@example.com on or before 10 November 2015.
