Aesthetics is flourishing in Black art and culture. Drawing from a number of recent literary, musical, visual, and performative works, this course investigates key creative and philosophical discourses shaping the burgeoning field of Black aesthetics. What notions of relationality are relevant to the experience and the ethical and political import of Black art? How does Black aesthetics engage the multiplicities of Blackness? What kinds of aesthetic experiences, concepts, and strategies are emerging? At the center of our discussions are webs of freedom, imagination, and value. The course explores these and other topics in engagement with theoretical texts across disciplines. Students will complete a final research project (essay or other creative production coupled with a statement).
